Renowned medical officer ridicules construction of CHPS Compounds in cities

CHPS-compoundA retired medical officer has kicked against the establishment of Community Basic Health Planning Services (CHPS) compounds in the Kumasi metropolis as a means of bringing better healthcare delivery to the doorsteps of the people.

Nana Dr. Kwakye Marfo ridicules plans by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) to construct CHPS compounds in the Ashanti Regional capital which already serves as home to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) and other district hospitals. He advises government to quit such move.

“The government should rather focus on constructing these health facilities in the villages where there are none” the Chief Executive Officer for WestEnd Hospital suggested during a Regional Performance Review forum for stakeholders in health.

The renowned medical officer believes it is waste of government’s resource to acquire lands, equipment and vehicles to start these projects in our cities where we already have big hospitals serving as referrals.

But the Health Information Officer for the Kumasi sub metro, Mr. Charles Ebo Abban insists the move to construct these CHPS compounds in cities is still relevant and can only be changed whena  management meeting is done to consider it disadvantages
