Rainstorm collapses school building; class under trees returns

school-treeAuthorities at the Al-Azhariya Islamic primary and junior high schools at old-Tafo in the Ashanti region have resorted to hold lessons under trees as they begin rebuilding their classroom blocks.

A heavy rainstorm on Tuesday evening ripped off the roofs of ten classroom blocks of the school a situation which is affecting teaching and learning.

Students are confined under trees to take lessons as the only alternative since the school no temporary structures to hold classes.

The Al-Azhariya Islamic school has a student population of 1000 with female pupils’ being the majority.

A teacher of the school Saamudeen Mohammed Kamil, who narrated the incident to rawgist.com, said it started around 5:30 pm on Tuesday when there was a heavy storm before the downpour.

According to him ten classroom blocks are affected as all the roofs were ripped off.school-rainstorm

He added that the school was preparing for its terminal examination for this academic year.

“The incident is affecting the female students the more because it is the girls’ block that suffered the devastation. I must emphasize also that teaching and learning are destructive,” he indicated.

Some parents and guardians have not allowed their wards to attend school for the fear that anything untoward could happen.

The authorities are however appealing to Government and other benevolent institutions to come to their aid.
