KNUST chaos: Yammin accuses Regional Coordinating Council of grand scheme to oust VC

Ghana Education News-Former Deputy Ashanti regional Minister; Joseph Yammin has accused the top brass of the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council of deliberate ball-watching in the chaos at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) as a ploy to remove the Vice Chancellor.

He says those calling for the head of Vice Chancellor; Prof. Kwasi Obiri Danso should rather be calling for the sack of the Regional Minister, Security Coordinator and some highly placed authorities in the region instead.

He says they have failed in their mandate of maintaining security since the demonstration was not secret. “It was incumbent on them to find out whether the demo would be peaceful or not since the fact of the demonstration was not a secret. They should have known that the students were very angry”, he vented.

Joseph Yammin was reacting to some comments from the Ashanti regional NPP Chair; Bernard Antwi-Boasiako that the recent chaos on the university campus was masterminded by the former President.

Mr. Yammin accused the NPP’s Chairman Wontumi of making unproductive arguments on radio and encouraged radio stations to stop interviewing him on important matters.

He downplayed Wontumi’s comments and insisted that John Mahama will come to Kumasi and the plan is to meet delegates of the party in the various constituencies. “If JM wants to visit the University, he will and Wontumi will even leave town when he does”, Yammin stated.

The KNUST has been closed indefinitely following a chaotic demonstration by the students against the management of the university over what they describe as brutalities meted out to them by local security men as well as high handedness of the administration in taking decisions that affect them.
