Ho Photowalk: Improving Ho’s online footprint to boost the local economy in the volta region

The Volta region has been described as one of the well-endowed region with a cross section of all the natural resources of Ghana dues to its geographical location.

This is because it stretches from the coast through the Forest Zone to the Savanah. This makes the region a replica of what the whole of Ghana can offer in terms of natural resources.

However, there is inadequate information about the region, its capital, Ho and its numerous potentials on the internet and other online portals which could project Ho and the entire region appropriately and attract the needed investment and support.

Having considered this challenge facing the region, the Global Shapers, Ho Hub of the World Economic Forum in partnership with Ho Node (a digital Innovation Hub) decided to undertake a project to bridge this gap.

The project which was dubbed #HoPhotowalk; captured the soul and scene of Ho, the capital city of the Volta Region with cameras as part of a grand digital project.

The digital project is framed on the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal 8: Promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment and decent work for all; and the Digital Transformation Initiative (DTI) a project launched as part of the Initiative on World Economic Forum’s Shaping the Future of Digital Economy and Society agenda.

The event brought together 25 photographers, videographers and digital media volunteers for a four hour walk to explore and capture historical, natural sites, landmarks as well as experience the warmth of Ho.

The goal of the project according to the shapers was to open up Ho digitally, boost the online presence of local businesses, attract tourist and investment opportunities to the city by sharing well-optimized photos online and accurately editing Ho Wikipedia page, which currently has scanty information and poor pictures.

The team of photographers (Memories Photography, Lensational.org, JMA photography, Skefotos, Massive Multimedia-Afloa, Volta Online, G2 Media, FK Bedi Photography, Bone Ecstasy Photography) and digital media volunteers made up of 3 women, converged at the Ho Civic Centre for the start of the walk.

Some of the key places captured along the routes include: Ho market, Ho Sports stadium, GBC Volta Star Radio, Volta Regional House of Chiefs, Courts, Ho Technical University, Parks & Gardens, Roman Catholic Church, E.P Church, Police, Fire Service, Prisons among others.  The walk ended at the Ho Node Hub for collation and editing of the photos captured.

Mr. Brian Dzansi, the project lead explained that “the photowalk is part of the hub’s digital project, designed to empower business owners, entrepreneurs and young people in Ho and the Volta Region with digital skills to reach the global market, access financial services, and effectively manage their businesses.”

He indicated that the rationale behind the walk is to help improve the Volta Regional Capital’s online footprint to boost the local economy as a first step to opening up the entire region to the world.

Mr. Dzansi appealed to corporate organizations, groups, individuals and the government to support scale up the photowalk to other parts of the region and country using images to tell Ghana’s own development stories to world.
