GNPC officials, Asokwa MP, MCE cut sod for Astro-turf construction

Mama Pat, Asokwa MP joins GNPC Executive Director of Foundation and Atonsu Chief to cut the sod for the construction of a modern standard artificial pitch at Atonsu.

Officials of the Ghana National Petroleum Commission (GNPC) under its Foundation umbrella on Monday morning joined the MP for Asokwa, Madam Patricia Appiagyei and MCE for the Municipality, Chief Akwannuasa Gyimah to cut the sod for the construction of an artificial grass pitch.

Popularly known as an astro-turf pitch, the 100 x 60cm facility when completed will have four floodlights and a stand-by generator.

The facility will also have a chain-link fence around the four perimeters of the modern standard pitch whose construction starts in three weeks time.

Speaking during the ground-breaking ceremony, Dominic Kwesi Eduah, Executive Director of GNPC Foundation said the facility when completed will serve the people of Asokwa as well as the Ashanti region.

He noted that the pitch to be constructed is proven to provide the most grass-like playability, adding that it can be compared to the one being used by the famous Barcelona Football Club in Spain.

ASOKWA MP:

Speaking at the ceremony, Madam Patricia Appiagyei, MP for Asokwa expressed profound appreciation to GNPC for the idea of the artificial pitch for the residents of Asokwa.

She noted that the municipality had bad pitches, adding the construction of the impending facility is timely since the youth can now have a better field to play football on.

Madam Appiagyei commended the local authorities as well as the Municipal Assembly for supporting the initiative and urged those who may be tasked to take charge of the facility to take good care including the drawing up of a strict maintenance regime.

The MP promised the construction of changing rooms for players and officials as well as the erection of a sitting arena for people who will visit to watch games at the standard stadium.

MCE:

On his part, Chief Akwannuasa Gyimah, Municipal Chief Executive for Asokwa called for support from opinion leaders and residents for the project.

He described the facility as having arrived at a timely period and urged the youth to take advantage of the opportunities it will provide to train and sharpen their talents in football.

CHIEF:

Nana Yaw Adarkwa Yiadom Gu-Ayeboafoh II, Chief of Atonsu lauded the efforts of GNPC and the MP for the project.

He tasked the contractor to finish the project in the four (4) months it has been tabled so as to provide space for the youth to explore their talents and skill in football.

Present at the exciting ceremony were leading and former leading members of Asokwa NPP including Chairman Asare Bediako, former Asokwa NPP chairman, Benjamin Fosu Nkrumah, Asokwa NPP chair, Papa Yaw Asare Bediako, Asokwa NPP secretary, Edmund Kyei, 1st Vice-Chairman-Asokwa NPP and Elliot Fosu Barnor, Presiding Member of the Asokwa Municipal Assembly.
