“Handpicking Candidates is dangerous for NPP”- Dr. Amoako Tuffuor sounds strong warning

Dr. Kwame Amoako Tuffour, an elder of the NPP

An elder of the New patriotic Party (NPP); Dr. Amoako Tuffuor says proposals of choosing parliamentary candidates for the party in various constituencies could be very dangerous and should not be encouraged.

NPP’s General Secretary; John Boadu last week stated that it was within the rights of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party to decide in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic to choose Parliamentary Candidates for the various constituencies.

Dr. Amoako Tuffuor in a Press statement however insists the move, if implemented will be undemocratic and inimical to the party’s wellbeing. He says voting should rather be encouraged to empower delegates at the constituencies. “First, the right of choice is vested in the various eligible voters in the constituencies. No one should take the right to elect from them. That will be undemocratic. We increased the number of voters at the localities to empower them. We should never go backwards and undermine this right.”

Dr. Amoako Tuffuor wondered why the NPP cannot put in the necessary protocols as would be adopted by the Electoral Commission for voting on December 7th, 2020.

“We need not wait one day longer. It is basically to satisfy the social distance and allied protocols–facemasks, handwashing, sanitizers etc”

He suggested that the voting be done at zonal levels within the constituencies, explaining that there are about 60 delegates per zone averagely.

He encouraged the party to learn from South Korea who successfully held their elections within a day in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He advises that the party holds elections quietly and tries to heal all wounds as they rally for another electioneering victory in the next elections.
