Emena noisy information centre closes down

speaker-horns1The long standing effort of some residents of Emena near KNUST to fight noise pollution seem to have paid off as the culprit; operators of the Victory information Centre have stopped transmitting.

The information centre; which constituted a major nuisance to the residents dished out noisy broadcasts early in the morning between 5 am and 9am and in the evening between 5PM and 9PM; sometimes hitting upto 90 decibels as measured by rawgist.com and some of the residents.

The noise was a disturbance to the Emena school as well as the Emena Hospital and KNUST students resident in the area.

It took the KMA several months of uneventful back and forth to finally take the recalcitrant noise maker to court; a situation which stopped the noise temporarily until the KMA caved in to pleas to settle the matter out of court. The noise returned with a vengeance until about a month ago when the noise stopped without explanation.

Residents are thankful to Australian resident Peter Cunningham and his family who have been moving around churches and schools educating people on the harmful effects of noise. He tells rawgist.com he is determined to stop the noise all over Kumasi.

rawgist.com has also been intricately involved in the fight against noise at Emena.

Noise has been found to contribute to ear problems, hypertension, heart problems, organ failures, deformed babies, miscarriages among several others.
