Meningitis outbreak: Death toll rises to 37

meningitisThe total number of people who have died from the Pneumococcal Meningitis disease has risen from 33 to 37.

The outbreak started last year in the Tain District of the Brong Ahafo Region but spread to Wenchi, Techiman, Bruohan, Kintampo and Sene districts in the same region.

Bole in the Northern Region and Offinso in the Ashanti Region have also recorded some cases.

On Wednesday, it was revealed that about six people have so far died from other kinds of meningitis in the Ashanti Region.

The Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Health, Tony Goodman told Citi News that the Ministry is waiting for some tests from the national level to review its data on the total number of cases recorded.

“Currently, we are dealing with the 160 cases, and we are dealing with about 37 death tolls. We are waiting for confirmation of some of the tests we sent to be able to review our data at the national level…It is the weather that is causing it… normally from October to April some of these things happen because of the change in the weather.”

The total number of recorded cases has reached 160.
