Mahama meets ECOWAS Chiefs of Defence Staff

mahama ecowasPresident John Dramani Mahama Wednesday granted audience to members of ECOWAS Chiefs of Defence Staff at the Flagstaff House in Accra.

The meeting, which was held behind closed doors, is believed to have discussed the menace of the Ebola disease and its security implications, Boko Haram insurgency, the political situation in Mali and Guinea-Bissau, Al Qaeda threats, issues of piracy and maritime insecurity.

The 15-member chiefs of Defence Staff were in the country to attend a three-day meeting in Accra to review the general security situation in the sub-region and outline measures aimed at responding to the security threats confronting the sub-region.

The meeting, which formed part of the 34th Ordinary Meeting of the ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff, was on the theme “Strengthening ECOWAS Military Cooperation for Peace, Stability and Development.”

Other key concerns that were considered included the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) as well as updates on ECOWAS Standby Force for the Sub Region

They were led to the presidency by Ghana’s Chief of Defence Staff Vice-Admiral Mathew Quashie and Madam Salamatu Hussein, Commissioner for Political Affairs and Peace and Security of ECOWAS.

Also in the meeting were Chief of Staff, Mr. Prosper Bani and Alhaji Baba Kamara, Senior Advisor to the President.
