High Electricity tarrifs kill radio, other businesses in Northern Ghana

nana-yaa-jantuahBusinesses in the northern part of Ghana are collapsing due to unbearable cost of electricity.

Radio stations and cold stores are among the most affected. Radio stations are now unable to operate even for twelve hours due to the killer tariffs  described by some managers.

Some workers are not paid because incomes are used to purchase electricity to run the station’s transmitters and other equipment.

rawgist.com’s Michael Amoateng reports that stations including Fiila Fm, Kessmi Fm, Bishara Radio,Diamond FM and North Star radio closed as early as 8 pm and 10pm and resume at 5am because they use prepaid meters.

This has been described as indiscrimenation on the part of prepaid meter users in the industry.

Chop bar operators, barbering saloons, hair dressers, market women and many institutions are closing down gradually in the name of power.

Some cold store operators in the region, tell rawgist.com “now we can’t buy power, as you can see all our fishes are going bad and our generator cannot power the freezer adequately. We have hence reduced the amount of fish we import; something that is affecting our business and our ability to take care of our families”.

They therefore appealed to the government to have a second look at the power industry to resolve this problem.
