[GUSA Cross Country]: KNUST Places 5th As UCC defends Men’s Title For The 5th Time

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has maintained its position at the 2019 Cross Country by placing 5th for both men and women divisions.

The annual Inter-University athletics competition which kick-started last Thursday came to an end on Saturday in Sunyani at the University of Energy and Natural Resources, UENR.

The athletes from Ghana’s premier Science and Technology University in Ghana were expected to improve upon their performances last year after weeks of training at the Paa Joe Sports stadium but couldn’t better the participation.

The University for Development Studies (UDS) defended its title in the women’s category by placing first in the overall women’s race with 34 points but a certain Rita Kyere of UCC emerged first out of the top 6 institutions.

Meanwhile, UCC defended the crown in the men’s division for the 5th consecutive year after amassing 62 points in the overall race. However, UEW’s sensational William Amponsah came first out of the top six for the men.

This year’s competition, which was the 24th edition had debutants, Ghana Institute of Management and Professional Studies (GIMPA) gracing the event. The athletes run for 10km on a rugged surface with minimal obstruction in a demarcated area around UENR’s football pitch

During the closing ceremony, Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA), President Dr. Charles Domfeh praised the athletes for participation and highlighted the importance of doing sports. He called on the students to be proud of their performances in-spite of their positions.

He went further to assure all stakeholders of GUSA’s commitment to ensure, the main GUSA to be held at the University of Ghana early next year becomes extremely successful.
