ACEP welcomes arbitration proceedings with Cote D’Ivoire

The African Centre for Energy Policy has welcomed the initiation of arbitration proceedings with neighbouring Cote d’Ivoire.

After a series of failed negotiations between the two countries, Ghana has filed a law suit under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, seeking a declaration that it has not encroached on Ivorian territorial waters in the exploration of oil.

This was necessitated by a continued receipt of threat letters from Cote D’Ivoire by oil companies operating in the disputed area.

The Attorney General and Minister of Justice who is leading a team of lawyers and maritime experts at a media briefing on Tuesday, expressed optimism that the ruling will favour Ghana.

The Programmes Manager of ACEP, Benjamin Boakye says in view of the rising tensions between the two countries, arbitration is the most appropriate thing now.
