Youth group calls on traditional authorities to champion new voters’ register

electoral-registerYouth group; Concerned Youth for Progressive Ghana is calling on traditional authorities to champion the call for a new and credible voters’ register.

The group which has already obtained over 300,000 signatures against the current register Wednesday initiated the Red Wednesday in solidarity for a new credible voter register to press home the need for a fresh voters’ register for Ghana.

They believe the current voters’ register is fraught with information that cannot be trusted and needs to be revised to forestall future chaos.

In a statement issued by the group Wednesday, founder of the group; Jamaludeen Abdullah said

“As custodians of the land, we believed Nananom should be main body leading the call for A NEW CREDIBLE VOTERS REGISTER, to restore confidence in the Electoral Commission and prevent any post electoral conflict and we thank God some of them have started the crusade for A NEW CREDIBLE VOTERS REGISTER with Asantehene, Otumfour Osei Tutu III being one.

As future leaders, we would do anything possible to ensure that we maintain the peaceful and harmonious country we have today in other to secure a better country tomorrow.”

RED WEDNESDAY IN SOLIDARITY FOR A NEW CREDIBLE VOTER REGISTER.

Press Statement: To all Media houses.

It is an undeniable fact that Ghana remains one of the most peaceful countries in Africa which has not been destabilized by post election violence as witnessed in many African countries. Ghanaians are always proud of this and we hope it remains same forever.

On the note, this does not guarantee an everlasting free election violence in the country.

Ghana narrowly escaped post election violence in 2012 when the elections had to be decided by the Supreme Court as a result of many electoral malpractices that allegedly occurred in 2012 elections. The highest Court of the land took more than eight months to settle that dispute.

Ghana’s fledgling democracy will be put to another serious test as we head towards the polls in our Presidential and Parliamentary elections come 2016. We have witnessed many instances across the continent on how civil wars and conflicts emanated through post electoral violence as a result of alleged electoral malpractices.
It is in the light of these and many others that we need to make sure all grievances from all stakeholders ( political parties, civil societies and organisations) are properly addressed as we head towards the election 2016.

One major factor that can result in post electoral violence will be the “CREDIBILITY OF THE VOTERS’ REGISTER”.

There is no denying the fact that most Ghanaians had lost faith in the Electoral Commission due to the way and manner in which it has conducted itself over the years as revealed during the Supreme Court hearing of the 2012 election petition. It is in the light of this that we need to explore every avenue geared towards instilling confidence of the people in the Electoral Commission and as such, A NEW CREDIBLE VOTERS REGISTER IS A NEED FOR GHANA’S BETTER FUTURE.

The call for a “NEW CREDIBLE VOTERS REGISTER” should not be politicised, instead, it must be a clarion call by all Ghanaians to ensure there is everlasting peace in our motherland and secure a bright future for our next generations.

Concerned Youth For Progressive Ghana, a non-political and nonpartisan group that went round the country to gather over 300,000 signatures of youths who are calling for a New Credible Voters register, at their workplaces, homes, football parks and others, petitioned the National House Of Chiefs, the National Peace Council and all the Regional House of Chiefs on the 1st of October with hard copies of the over 300,000 signatures gathered across the country.

As custodians of the land, we believed Nananom should be main body leading the call for A NEW CREDIBLE VOTERS REGISTER, to restore confidence in the Electoral Commission and prevent any post electoral conflict and we thank God some of them have started the crusade for A NEW CREDIBLE VOTERS REGISTER with Asantehene, Otumfour Osei Tutu III being one.

As future leaders, we would do anything possible to ensure that we maintain the peaceful and harmonious country we have today in other to secure a better country tomorrow.

Concerned Youth For Progressive Ghana would like to further deepen the clarion call for A NEW CREDIBLE REGISTER by declaring a RED WEDNESDAY. We plead to all Patriotic citizens to Wear a Red attire on Wednesday take a pic and upload it to all social media platforms with the hashtags #SaveGhanaNow.

We believe the call for A NEW CREDIBLE REGISTER isn’t partisan and shouldn’t be partisan but a move to ensure Ghana does not witness any POST ELECTORAL CONFLICT. Let’s all join this clarion call.
