The communications director of the Ghana Football Association, Saani Daara, has revealed that the FA was forced to return the US$11.7 million earned from the 2010 World Cup after ex-Sports Minister, Akua Sena Dansua – now Ghana’s Ambassador to Germany – threatened the FA boss, Kwesi Nyantakyi.
The FA said it had made plans of investing the money into the improvement of football structures in the country after drafting a 71-paged development plan but were forced to return the money by the former Sports Minister.
“What happened with that money was that Akua Sena Dansua put a phone call through to Kwesi Nyantakyi and told him if you want your peace of mind in this country, bring all the money. It was a threat,” Darra told Starr Sports on Extra Time Saturday.
A similar situation confronts the Ghana FA again as the Presidential Commission of Inquiry has ordered the nation’s football governing body to pay up the entire US$8 m earned from the 2014 World Cup.
The GFA is adamant to release the remaining US$4 million after paying government the loan of US$4 million used in settling appearance fees of the Black Stars during the Brazil 2014 tournament.
