Sanitation must power rotation of independence day parade-NPP Chair

The Bekwai constituency chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Patrick Adu Gyamfi has commended the President for the choice of Tamale for the 62nd observation of the Independence day Parade.

He has also lauded the President’s intention to rotate the independence day parade following the success of the Tamale edition, the first ever outside the capital of Accra.

Mr. Adu Gyamfi has, however, suggested that sanitation should be used as the criteria for the selection of the regional capital out of the now 16 regional capitals every year to host the Independence Day parade.

The NPP executive has, therefore, recommended that the government through the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources to institute a competition for the Regions and that the regional capital which emerges the cleanest and overall winner qualifies to host the subsequent parade.

According to Mr. Adu Gyamfi, the proposal would be a perfect plan to tackle the worsening sanitation problems with city authorities are struggling to deal with the situation.

He noted that the adoption of sanitation as a yardstick for the selection of cleanest regional capital for the occasion would also contribute to the President’s bid to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa by the end of his term.

In April 2017, President Akufo-Addo declared war on filth in Ghana and promised to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa.

The NPP chairman said not only would Accra as the national capital and regional capitals be clean but also the district capitals as cleanliness would transcend to the various towns and communities.

According to him, the proposed competition would help enhance sanitation and ensure discipline among MMDAs across the regions which should form the basis of the competition.

The Bekwai NPP chairman has therefore charged the MMDAS make waste collection and the fight against filth a priority in order to tackle the phenomenon of heaps of garbage which are common features in most communities.

In his view, the exercise would also give the national sanitation campaign, which is yielding no result, a better boost.
