Man severs brother’s hand, slashes him several times in ‘petty’ squabble

jail-prisonA man is on the run after severing his brother’s hand and inflicting several cutlass wounds on him during what neighbours say is a usual disagreement between them at the Anaji SSNIT Flats in Takoradi on Tuesday.

The Kwesimintsim police say they are looking for the suspect, identified only as Kwame while his brother-victim has been sent to the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital for medical care.

Neighbours told the Daily Graphic that the brothers, who are unemployed and live with their mother, a petty trader in an apartment on the SSNIT Flat Block H in the Sekondi/Takoradi Metropolis, usually disturbed the neighbourhood with their early morning squabbles which sometimes degenerated.

While they were unable to tell what started Tuesday’s disagreement, they said all they heard were the younger brother’s screams for help at about 9 a.m.

The unusual cry for help caught the attention of other flatmates who entered their apartment only to be greeted with the gory sight of Seth, the younger brother, in a pool of his own blood with one hand chopped off at the wrist.

In addition Seth also had several deep cuts on his head, leg, arms and back. He was consequently rushed to the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital.

Kwame the suspect took advantage of the people’s concentration on his injured brother to escape.

According to the Kwesimintsim police, Kwame is currently at large and they were making efforts to get him.

The Kwesimintsim District Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mr. Thomas Bayor deplored the cruel act and urged members of the community to help avert such happenings.

He said it could have been averted if the neighbours had reported the petty quarrels to the police to act on since it was disturbing them.

DSP Bayor said the police had taken over investigations and were doing everything to apprehend the brother.

He reminded the public to control their tempers and learn to walk to the police station in the face of extreme provocation instead of taking the law into their own hands.
