Galamsey: Twum Boafo supports burning of excavators, calls for stiffer restrictions on Mercury

Former CEO, Ghana Freezones Board

Former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Board; Kwadwo Twum Boafo has suggested the need to impose tougher restrictions on the importation of Mercury into the country.

He believes this will contribute significantly to the fight against galamsey.

Kwadwo Twum Boafo, who was speaking on Metro TV said the galamsey menace, if not tackled immediately, will lead to the poisoning of all our water sources in a short time.

He spoke against Ghanaians collaborating with Chinese nationals to destroy the environment and water bodies.

“The Chinese will not dream of doing this in China, they would be shot. I will not even promise that NDC will solve it in 2024, it needs to be dealt with now otherwise we would have drunk so much mercury by 2024 we won’t find our way to the polling station” he said.

He also supported the burning of excavators by security personnel detailed to halt illegal mining in Ghana. He explained that the corrupt nature of Ghanaians warranted the burning of excavators as owners will trace the excavators and retrieve them from wherever the government decides to keep them.

On the burning of the NPP women’s organizer’s excavators, he offered that he was not impressed as he believes Madam Kate Gyamfua is being used as a scapegoat because she spoke against the president’s cousin who also happens to be the roads minister.
