Amazing kids’ newspaper moves to encourage literacy in Ghana

As part of their literacy drive, Treasure Kids Newspaper (TKN) has launched a nationwide literacy campaign aimed at promoting reading amongst children; with parents and teachers as advocates .

The TKN team begun their school tour in Accra and Kumasi to introduce the fun, vibrant, educative and informative paper to teachers and students.

Publisher of the Paper; Ms. Precious Bonsu however explains to rawgist.com’s Bernard Buachi that a worrying trend was discovered on their tours.

“From our research and feedback from parents and teachers, it became evident that literacy rates were low and this was partly due to the lack of supplementary readers like storybooks, newspapers, journals  and magazines, for kids”.

This disturbing situation, she explains forced them to launch the TKN #GETSPOTTED campaign to encourage children to read and parents to buy them reading materials.

“For the students in deprived public schools, orphanages, foster homes etc, we put together an initiative called  the TKN “Sponsor a School” program for corporate institutions, community leaders, MPs, individuals and philanthropists to subscribe to the paper to donate to these children”.

So far, many organizations and individuals have welcomed this initiative and have given back to their communities as their social responsibility.

Mr Jason Boateng, CEO of Carpo Timber Ltd, who recently donated 500 copies to a public school in Kubease said, “I know the benefits of reading to children and the impact of literacy to change society. I’m very happy to be a TKN sponsor ambassador and I pledge to donate copies to these brilliant but needy students. I encourage corporate Ghana and individuals to support this worthy cause.”

With a cover price of Ghc 2.50p, TKN comes out every last Friday of the month and is available on subscription in schools and homes  and also in all good supermarkets and newsagents; Kingdom Books (KNUST branch), Laramart Osu, Goil shop (opposite Golden Tulip Accra) or call 0203190400 to order and it’ll be delivered to your home, school or office!
