13,500 nurses placed on government payroll – Ministry of Health

The Ministry of Health has announced that 13,500 nurses have been placed on the government payroll.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, and signed by Tony Goodman, Deputy Director and spokesperson of the Ministry, the measure was described as part of efforts to address concerns within the nursing profession.

Mr Goodman said the Ministry had also paid arrears of nursing trainee allowances, settled claims owed to the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), and absorbed 50 per cent of admission fees for nursing training institutions.

He added that the government had honoured provisions in the collective bargaining agreement with nurses and midwives, while steps were being taken to improve conditions of service across the health sector.

The statement also said the leadership of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) had apologised to the Minister of Health, Mr Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, over what the Association admitted were unwarranted public criticisms.

It said the Association had pledged to pursue dialogue in resolving matters affecting its members.
