11 killed in Agogo Fulani menace

fulaniEleven murder cases have been recorded between January 2014 and January 2016 as a result of clashes between residents and Fulani nomads at Agogo in the Asante Akim North District of the Ashanti Region, Police in the region have revealed.

Six cases are under investigation whilst four are awaiting advice from the Attorney Generals Department.

A Fulani man has also been sentenced to 30-years imprisonment by the Juaso court for murder.

Tension between the two rival groups remains unabated despite several interventions by the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC).

The residents have been accusing the nomads of raping their women and allowing their cattle to destroy farmlands in the area.

Renewed clashes between the two groups on Wednesday January, 27 led to the killing of five cattle leaving a Fulani herdsman who sustained multiple gunshot wounds in a critical condition.

This comes after Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Kwadwo Baah Agyemang asked the youth in the area to resist any attack by the Fulani herdsmen.

The Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Kofi Boakye has condemned the statements by the MP describing his utterances as “inaccurate”.

The Police Chief said, “Some of the things that were said by the MP at the press conference were not accurate. First I want to say that we are in a democratic society and nobody can take the laws into their hands. No amount of mistrust or incapability of any security agency will warrant anybody to take the laws into their hands. We have taken note of their threats and we will work accordingly”.

He indicated that a decisive action will be taken to rid of Fulani herdsmen at the areas they are dominating.

He added that Police will not countenance any indiscipline from anyone in the area.

DCOP Kofi Boakye stressed that the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) was fully aware of the issues in the area and will soon meet to address them.

He called on security agencies and other stakeholders to intensify border checks and controls to monitor the entry of the herdsmen into the country.
