Veep tells Alavanyo, Nkonya residents gov’t won’t tolerate any more violence

veepVice President Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur has warned the people of Alavanyo and Nkonya in the Volta region that their violence will no longer be tolerated.

The two communities have been involved in a bloody conflict over a disputed land for decades.

In December last year, there were renewed clashes following gunshots that left one person dead.

The violence in the two communities has persisted for years despite several mediation attempts by Government, religious leaders and other groups.

Now Mr Amissah Arthur says no more disturbances will be tolerated.

He was in the Volta Region to meet with chiefs over the recurring violence.

The Vice-President said some people had been profiting from the conflict and it was in their interest to keep the violence raging unabated.

But the interest of the few cannot override those of the larger population, he insisted.

Mr. Arthur pointed out that the conflict was taking a new and dangerous character that must be watched carefully.

“It is an act of illegality that farms that are not in the conflict zone are being destroyed…and we need to bring this conflict to an end so that we can make progress as a people,” he stated.

The Vice-President reminded the people that there cannot be a winner in the conflict between the neighbouring communities.

“The state will not allow one set of people in a community to subdue another set through the force of arms because we have more arms than you have and if the IGP were minded to, he could destroy the whole area, so we cannot seek victory in a conflict in a community,” he warned.
