A Member of Parliament (MP) has revealed that the amount of money politicians use in campaigning during a bye-election is higher than what the government spends on a cabinet minister.
“The cost involved in providing an MP is ten times what will be used to provide a cabinet minister” , Manhyia South Member of Parliament, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh stated.
Contributing to discussion Saturday on Joy FM’s news analysis programme “Newsfile” on the need for the state to provide security to legislators following the death of murdered colleague MP; J.B Danquah, Dr. Opoku Prempeh stated that MPs are exposed to all kinds of physical attacks in their line of duty.
He therefore wants government to provide 24/7 police protection to all the 270 MPs to avoid recurrence such as that of the late Joseph Boakye Danquah Adu murdered in cold blood.
There have been arguments as to whether or not, the state is ready to finance the security of the MPs but the legislators insist “our lives are equally as precious as that of all government appointees”
