There was drama at Agbobgloshi market on Thursday when Accra Mayor Alfred Oko Vanderpuije ordered the arrest of a youngaccra-mayor man who had come to sell plantain while traders were busy clearing the filth at the market.

The Mayor could not understand why the young man failed to join the team in clearing the filth and rather decided to display his plantain for sale at a time when everybody was busy cleaning the area.

The man was arrested and sent away by the Mayor’s security detail, but it is unclear if charges will be pressed against him.

The Mayor commended members of the Greater Accra Traders Association for their participation in the three-hour clean up exercise in the markets.

They cleaned and desilted choked gutters in and around the markets.

The exercise came as a result of improper waste management in the metropolis, which has caused an outbreak of cholera.

Dr. Vanderpuije made the commendation when he led the AMA’s environmental officers to tour various market places to witness the exercise.

He occasionally took part in the exercise, interacted with the traders, advising them to comply with basic hygiene principles.

He said that was the surest way of protecting themselves from the cholera the outbreak in Accra.

He noted the assembly has in recent times, stopped some food vendors who sold their foods in filthy environments.

The Mayor further advised the public to avoid patronizing foods prepared or sold in unhygienic environments.
