Group asks Huudu Yahaya not to succumb to pressure

hudu-yahayaA group calling itself “Movement for Alhaji Huudu Yahaya” is urging Alhaji Yahaya to not succumb to pressure and withdraw from the race for the chairmanship of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The group alleged that some bigwigs in the party were persuading Alhaji Yahaya to step down for their preferred candidate who is one of the aspirants.

They believe that Alhaji Yahaya, who is also a vice chairman of the NDC, is likely to win the race if not stopped from the contest.

A spokesperson for the group, Ms Alice Anthony, who said this at a press conference in Kumasi, explained that there was the need for all contestants in the race to run without any problem.

Those contesting the national chairmanship of the party are the incumbent, Dr Kwabena Adjei, the National Coordinator of NADMO, Mr Kofi Portuphy, Alhaji Yahaya and former Ghana’s High Commissioner to Malaysia, Mr Dan Abodakpe.

Ms Anthony, who is also the Deputy Secretary of the NDC branch in the Oforikrom Constituency, said the selection of people into political positions should not be based on one’s ethnic or religious affiliation.

She said it should rather be based on performance and one’s capability to bring development to the people and the nation as a whole.

“Any attempt at selecting people based on ethnic and religious affiliation will surely spell doom for the nation’s political dispensation,” she added.

The press conference was aimed at urging Alhaji Yahaya to continue with his ambition of becoming the National Chairman of the NDC.

According to the group, information reaching them was that some individuals and groups were trying to persuade candidate Yahaya to step down for their preferred candidate, since Alhaji Yahaya was the one likely to win the contest.

The spokesperson described as unfortunate attempts by some people who have been removing paraphernalia of Alhaji Yahaya and cautioned them to desist from the act in the interest of peace and development of democracy in the country.

Alhaji Yahaya has 10 years experience as the general secretary and 12 years experience as the vice chairman of the party and has served in various capacities on behalf of the party.
