Government to review NADMO act to make it more proactive

NADMOGovernment has announced plans to review the operations of the National Disaster and Management Organization to make it more proactive to better deal with disasters and emergencies.

The review has become necessary to give the relief agency greater authority in dealing with the emerging challenges in disaster management in the country following what has been described as the lackadaisical attitude of the relief agency when disasters occur.

Speaking at a program to commemorate the International Day for Disaster Reduction in Accra Monday, the Minister of Interior, Mark Owen Woyongo said under the review, NADMO would be empowered to be more disaster resilient.

The International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR) which is observed on the 13th of October annually is aimed at raising awareness on how people are taking action to reduce their risk to disasters.

Meanwhile the Environmental Protection Agency has emphasized the need for the country to do more in terms of eradicating totally the menace of illegal mining as it is one of the major causes of disasters in the country.

Many illegal miners otherwise known as galamsey have died in the process of prospecting for gold and other natural minerals.
Most of the deaths are as a result of landslides triggered by the illegal mining activities.

Speaking to LIVE NEWS on the occasion of International Day for Disaster Reduction, Head of Environmental Education at the Environmental Protection Agency, Emmanuel Salo emphasized the need to tackle the galamsey menace and the related negative effects
