Ghana ranked 138th on 2014 Human Development Report

Ghana-marketGhana placed 138th out of 189 countries on the Human Development Report 2014 Rankings.

The ranking is based on a country’s development of its people in the areas of Education, Health and livelihood.

The 2014 Human Development Report – Sustaining Human Progress: Reducing Vulnerabilities and Building Resilience, which was presented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), shows that levels of human development continue to rise in Ghana although at a slow pace.

The report also indicates that the gap between higher and lower human development groups is narrowing.

The report further ranked Norway, Australia and Switzerland on top of the Human development Index while Niger, Congo DR and the Central African Republic were placed at the bottom.

Although the report shows an overall slowdown in economic growth, Economic Specialist with the UNDP, Kordzo Sedega told Citi News, Ghana deserves applause for the rankings.

He stated that in previous reports, Ghana was ranked 135th but “you might be tempted to think that Ghana has dropped to 138, but that was not the case because the methodologies are different.”

“Ghana has not changed at all even though the value has increased marginally by .002 or so,” he maintained.

Sedega explained that experiencing human development is a gradual process and Ghana, he said, is gradually picking up since “it used to be in the lower-middle human development category.”

Ghana is now in the medium human development category.

Human development indicators according to UNDP’s economic specialist, “do not change very much on a yearly basis.”
