The Ghana Police Service has cautioned the general public to be circumspect in dealing with strangers who ask them to make financial commitments in exchange for prizes.
The police Service reports of several cases of fraud perpetrated against unsuspecting members of the public in recent times.
Many individuals are said to have fallen prey to fraudulent activities through internet and mobile phone scams.
The scammers tell their victims through text messages or phone calls as well as on social media platforms that they have won a prize in a promotion they had not entered, and are made to pay sums of money as processing fee to enable them retrieve the prize. Despite caution by telecom operators urging subscribers to ignore such messages and calls, some still fall to the confidence tricksters.
The Director-General in-charge of Public Affairs at the Ghana Police Service DCOP David Ampah Benin tells Live News the service is working with the various stakeholders especially the telecommunications companies to tackle the phenomenon which has become common.
He however cautions the general public to be on the lookout for fraudsters.
