Civil society group warns of economic hardship for obuasi if AngloGold Ashanti abrogates MBC contract

anglogoldA civil society grouping calling itself the Obuasi Concerned Civil Society Platform is warning of dire economic implications over a brewing abrogation of contract between Anglo Gold Ashanti and local construction firm, Mining and Building contractors (MBC).

The company, MBC which employs over a thousand employees mostly from Obuasi has enjoyed a 92-year contractual working agreement with AngloGold Ashanti.

However, owing to the turbulent times in the global mining industry, the Mining giant has resolved to sever ties with MBC as part of its downsizing agenda.

The issue has gone before an Accra Commercial High Court for adjudication. But the civil society organization believes abrogating the Underground Development Service contract of MBC will bring untold hardship to over a thousand families in Obuasi and its environs.

Spokesperson of the group, Malik Bin Ibrahim tells rawgist.com the coalition wants the case to be settled outside the courts as any judgment given will benefit a party to the case but not the residents.
