Bonwire Kente festival: Chief calls on gov’t to establish factory to boost industry

Nana Bobie Ansah II; Chief of Bonwire in the Ejisu Juaben Municipality of Ashanti region, has appealed to the government to as part of her “One District, One Factory policy”, establish a yarn factory to boost the kente industry in the area.

He was speaking during the recently ended  festival of the chiefs and people of Bonwire.

Nana Bobie Ansah explains that the cost of yarns used in the weaving of kente was making the product very expensive and out of reach of the youth of the area. He believes local manufacturing of the yarns will make it easier and less costly to acquire and make kente more affordable.

The festival was under the theme; “Promoting Development Through our Culture and Heritage, The Bonwire Potential” and aimed at showcasing the rich culture, history and value of Kente as originated by the people of Bonwire.

He estimated that about 75% of residents in the area earned their livelihoods from weaving kente and highlighted the employment potential of kente for the youth of the area.

Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo, who was represented by Ashanti regional minister Mr. Simon Osei-Mensah, commended the Chiefs and people of Bonwire and said the celebration of Bonwire Kente Festival is meant to preserve and protect the cultural and aesthetic values of the Kente cloth as well as promote and project the various uses of Kente.

He moreover stated that the theme falls in line with government’s policies of promoting job creation activities in the country, and government therefore encourages potential private investors to take advantage of the One District One Factory policy to establish factories along the value chain of Kente production by producing the needed raw materials and also promoting the marketing and sale of Kente.
