Aboabo residents plead for mercy ahead of Thursday’s demolition

Aboabo drainSome residents living along the Aboabo storm drain in the Asokore-Mampong Municipality of the Ashanti Region say they fear being thrown to the curb if city authorities carry out an intended demolition exercise scheduled for Thursday.

Their fear is informed by challenge of unavailability of ready accommodation generally within the Kumasi Metropolis.

Inhabitants of the area annually see some varied levels of flooding in the wet season, when water from the drainage system overflows. The marshy nature of the area worsens this situation.

The Asokore-Mampong Municipal Assembly (AMMA) confirmed their intention to carry out an extensive demolition exercise along the drainage system at Aboabo.

This, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the area, Alhaji Nurudeen Amidan, said was to rid the area of illegal structures and to protect the Municipality from future disasters erupting from flooding.

Meanwhile, resident cry they need considerable time to find alternative accommodation before any such demolition exercise.
