Asawase youth on rampage against police brutality

Ghana News-Some scores of rampaging youth from the Asawase community stormed the streets of Manhyia in the early hours of Thursday to protest the brutal murder of seven people the Police claimed were armed robbers.

Pouring onto the streets, the youth pointed metal substances on drivers who plied the routes in the area.

Burning some tyres and holding some sticks, the youth vented their spleen on passengers and some media persons who happened to cover the event.

A GH-one reporter and a colleague from TV3 were nearly lynched by the irate youth in the ensuing melee.

CHIEF IMAM:
Sensing danger about the happenings at the Manhyia Community, the Chief Imam stormed the Kumasi Central Mosque as the youth were approaching.

Speaking to the youth later on, Sheikh Haroun Abdul-Moomen asked them to calm down and discard the manner of the protest.

According to the Chief Imam, it was best settling matters through properly laid down procedures.

Rather than using violence, Sheikh Moomen asked them to table their grievances to the appropriate quarters for redress.

BACKGROUND:
Two days ago, the Ashanti Regional Police Command gunned down seven people they suspected to be armed robbers.

Briefing the media last Wednesday, DCOP Kwesi Duku, Ashanti Police Commander said the seven had been preparing to attack a mining site at Manso Nkwanta, a town in Amansie West District of Ashanti.

He noted the seven had some ammunition on them at the time the Police accosted them.

The seven, the Police Commander noted  engaged them in a face off resulting in the Police firing back.

Unfortunately, the seven got killed in the gun battle.

However, the Asokore Mampong Municipal Chief Executive, Alhaji Alidu Seidu has discredited the account of the police.

He believes the charge that the seven were armed robbers was false since three of the killed people were known NPP members and worked as national security operatives.
