12,802 Officers Promoted as IGP Clears 10-Year Delay

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno has authorised the promotion of 12,802 police officers, effectively clearing a decade-long backlog in career progression within the Service.

The promotions, covering ranks from Lance Corporal to Chief Inspector, were finalised between January and early February 2026, according to the IGP’s Secretariat.

The Secretariat stated that the process was conducted in line with the Police Service Regulations, 2012 (C.I. 76), and comprised both routine administrative promotions and those granted through special recommendations.

It firmly rejected allegations of nepotism, stressing that the entire exercise followed established procedures and due process.

“All unit, district, divisional and regional commanders across the 25 police regions were directed to submit the names of officers who met the eligibility requirements for promotion,” the Secretariat explained.

Out of the total number promoted, approximately 11,900 junior-ranking officers were elevated after serving more than the mandatory four-year period in their respective ranks.

A further 600 officers were promoted based on special recommendations.

The Secretariat also reviewed petitions from officers who alleged delays or unfair treatment. This included personnel who had remained on interdiction for over five years but were subsequently cleared of wrongdoing.

Following thorough assessments, these officers were granted their deserved promotions.

Additionally, families of officers who lost their lives in the line of duty successfully petitioned for posthumous promotions, ensuring their service and sacrifice received formal recognition.
