Will.i.am celebrates 10th UK number one

Will.i.amRapper Will.i.am has scored his 10th UK number one single, as It’s My Birthday tops the official chart.

The song, featuring 17-year-old singer Cody Wise, follows hits such as Scream and Shout, This Is Love and I Gotta Feeling, with his band Black Eyed Peas.

The Voice judge knocked last week’s number one, Ariana Grande’s Problem, down to number two, while Ella Henderson’s Ghost fell to three.

In the album chart, Ed Sheeran spent a third week in the peak position.His second album, X (pronounced multiply), held off challenges from the Manic Street Preachers and Dolly Parton to retain the crown.The record, featuring the hit single Sing, has sold more than 327,000 copies to date, according to the Official Chart Company.

It is also number two in the US, having debuted at the top spot in its opening week.

Further down the chart, Nicola Benedetti’s Homecoming entered at 19, to make her the first British classical violinist to crack the UK Top 20 since Vanessa Mae in 1995.

The musician, who will perform at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, said: “I am absolutely thrilled to have reached the Top 20, not something a classical artist ever expects.”

Other new entries in the album chart came from dance act Example, whose fifth record, Live Life Living, debuted at eight, and singer-songwriter Sia, whose critically-acclaimed 1,000 Forms of Fear made its first appearance at 11.

The Australian singer has never made the top 40 in her own right before – but her profile received a boost after she co-wrote and sang David Guetta’s number one single, Titanium.

The 38-year-old has also achieved success as a writer, working with the likes of Rihanna (Diamonds), Britney Spears (Perfume), and Beyonce (Pretty Hurts).

Back in the singles chart, Jess Glynne scored her third top 10 hit of the year with the deep house track Right Here.

Climbing from 200 to number six in the space of a week, it is the first solo hit for the British singer.

Combined with her guest appearances on the Clean Bandit’s Rather Be and Route 94’s My Love – both of which reached number one – the newcomer has sold more than one million singles this year.

The Vamps also made a massive leap up the charts, climbing 35 places to number four with Somebody To You.

The British boyband enjoyed a sales boost after re-recording their single with US star Demi Lovato.
