Social Welfare Department in Asokwa gives to PWDs

Mr Dickson Frimpong, Head of Department of Social Welfare and Community Development giving out a cheque to a beneficiary of the PWDS support fund.

The Social Welfare Department of the Asokwa Municipal Assembly on Thursday morning disbursed an amount of GH36, 597.00 to persons with disability (PWDs) in the municipality.

The disbursement was made in the form of cash and items that were needed by 18 persons who qualified for assistance.

In a brief ceremony at the precincts of the Assembly, the 18 persons received items and cheques to start up businesses they have convinced the Department to undertake.

Some of the persons received amounts that ranged between GH800.00 and GH3,050.00 with others receiving knitting machines, refrigerators, steel containers and fufu pounding machines.

MCD REPRESENTATIVE:

Speaking ahead of the presentation ceremony, Nana Yaa Nyarko, Human Resource Manager at the Asokwa Municipal Assembly who represented the Municipal Coordinating Director (MCD) urged the beneficiaries to put both the amounts and equipment they were about to receive into good use.

She noted that the Assembly believes in equipping persons with various forms of disabilities (PWDs) in the community with skills and other forms of assistance.

These start-ups, she stressed was intended to support PWDS so that they could expand their businesses as well as start new ones to become self-supporting.

The age whereby PWDs sat at the road side and begged for alms, the HR manager noted was long gone and that they now need to do something to eke out a living.

SOCIAL WELFARE DEPARTMENT HEAD:

Head of Department-Social Welfare and Community Development, Dickson Frimpong expressed delight at the opportunity by his outfit to give to support PWDs.

He noted that the Department is determined to pull resources to support all PWDs in Asokwa to make their lives meaningful.

Mr Frimpong urged PWDs in the Municipality to visit the Department and put forward issues they may be challenged with so that the Assembly could support them to resolve same.

He urged persons who were receiving assistance to put to judicious use the items or monies they had received so that it will become useful for them and their families.

REPRESENTATIVE:

Gifty Afi Wetsi, Ghana Federation of Disability Organization (GFD) Representative in Asokwa on behalf of the beneficiaries thanked the Asokwa Assembly for the release of the 4th quarter funds.

She noted that the items and monies the Assembly was giving out would put PWDs on their toes to do something for themselves and their families.

The GFD rep appealed to the Common Fund Administrator to increase the funds to the Asokwa Municipal Assembly so that it can cater for the many PWDs who live within the community.
