The Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party has rejected claims being levelled by some persons within the party that the 80.81% overwhelming endorsement chalked by Nana Akufo-Addo in the Special Electoral College was achieved through the intimidation of delegates.
Mr. Adams Mahama made this known when he addressed the 38 delegates who voted in the August 31 contest, when Nana Akufo-Addo took his thank you tour to the Upper East Region on Tuesday, September 9, 2014.
The NPP Chairman, visibly upset by the allegations being levelled against delegates from three Northern Regions, stated without equivocation that “people voted because they love Akufo-Addo. They voted for him because he is a true, committed party man.”
According to him, “These (delegates) are level headed people, they don’t need anybody to tell them who to vote for. They don’t need money before they vote. It is power they want and they are voting for someone who can bring them power in 2016. That is why we voted for Nana Akufo-Addo.”
He explained that the sole interest of delegates of the Upper East Region “is to see the NPP in power.”
“As for the Upper East, our yes is yes, and we want to assure you (Nana Akufo-Addo) again that we will vote massively for you on October 18”, Mr. Adams said, to a rapturous applause from the 38 delegates gathered.
Member of Parliament for Talensi, Hon. Robert Mosore, who is also the Upper East Regional co-ordinator for Nana Akufo-Addo’s campaign urged the delegates to discount whatever propaganda that is being levelled against Nana Akufo-Addo from persons within the party.
He revealed that some of the aspirants had indicated that they were no longer going to work with the constituency chairmen “because they are for Nana”, explaining that “they may make these attempts to use others but we are on the lookout.”
“I am appealing to you, as an MP and your brother, that this is the time we have to make our voices heard and make the region proud. We know this time around you will give Nana Akufo-Addo a more resounding victory on October 18,” Hon Mosore added.
The Talensi MP urged the leadership, elders and members of the NPP to desist from calling on any of the 4 presidential aspirants to stand down.
“We should not convince anyone to step down. It is important for people to accept their defeat. It is strange that people who lost miserably are now emboldened by their loss. We shall meet on October 18 and we will know who, truly, the choice of the grassroots is. I pray that you all remain strong and healthy to deliver that emphatic message on October,” he said.
On his part, Mustapha Hamid, who is the spoksesperson for Nana Akufo-Addo, thanked the delegates for the 97.37% victory they gave him on August 31.
According to him, the delegates of the NPP have shown that the “Presidency is not an experimental play field. We cannot experiment with our nation by voting for candidates who are not tried and tested.”
He urged the delegates to once again remain united and focused.
“Let us not allow people who want to sow seeds of division amongst us to succeed, and I am happy that the Upper East Region indicated clearly that they are united behind Nana Akufo-Addo,” he added.
Sharing the sentiments of the Upper East Regional NPP Chairman, on the alleged intimidation of delegates being made by Nana Ohene Ntow, spokesperson for Mr. Alan Kyerematen, Mustapha Hamid stated that “I find it very insulting that they would level such accusations. It is an insult to the intelligence of delegates who should not be insulted in that manner.”
“Punish them in a bigger fashion on October 18, so next time when you see people of principle you don’t insult them. Let them know that you are determined, and want a tried, tested, committed and loyal candidate as your presidential candidate.”
Present at the meeting were, amongst others, Hon. Dominic Nitiwul, Deputy Minority Leader and MP for Bimbilla; Hon. Robert Mosore, MP for Talensi; Hon. Boniface Agambila, MP for Nabdam; Mr. Rockson Bukari, a National Council representative from the Upper East Region; Mr. Gabriel Asaana, former Upper East NPP Regional Chairman; the 16 regional executives; and the 13 out of the 15 constituency chairmen.
