New Yaa-Naa’s coronation not done deal for peace – Security analyst

The people of Dagbon are excited a new Ya-Naa has been outdoored today, Friday, January 25, 2019, after so many years of disagreements.

But a security analyst, Emmanuel Sowatey, says they are not out of the woods yet with regards to finding a lasting peace to their woes.

“The coronation is not coterminous to lasting peace because such processes are reversible. And if we are not careful we may take one step forward and another step backward,” he said.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Friday, Mr. Sowatey, who has followed the Dagbon conflict for over two decades, said: “the lasting peace would be tested when the new Yaa-Naa comes to power. And how he engages with the other faction will have a sterling impact on his legacy, the legacy of the government, the legacy of the country and the legacy of the Dagbon State in particular.”

The Yendi Township has been under curfew for so many years following a protracted chieftaincy dispute between the two royal gates of Dagbon.

Following the approval of a road-map for peace in Dagbon, the final funeral rites of former overlords of Dagbon were conducted, and a new Yaa-Naa named in the person Abubakari Mahama II.

President Nana Akufo-Addo, former President John Dramani Mahama among other dignitaries in Dagbon to grace the historic coronation of Abubakari Mahama II as the new Yaa-Naa.

There is currently excitement in the town over the event.
