Kumasi: Prison officers’ uniforms missing

securityReports reaching Adomonline.com indicate some uniforms belonging to prison officers at the Kumasi Central Prison have gone missing.

It is suspected some inmates wore the uniforms and escaped during last night’s riots at the prison, which was preceded by a fire outbreak.

Contrary to earlier reports that the fire had been set by the inmates, Public Relations Officer of the prison, ASP James Annan, stated that the fire started after a part of the building was struck by lightning during a rainstorm.

Luv FM’s Erastus Asare Donkor, who has been at the scene from last night, reported that sources from the prisons indicate that some uniforms belonging to the officers have been stolen.

He said officers would start a head count of the inmates to determine whether some have escaped or not.

Two inmates were confirmed dead as at Wednesday night.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show on Thursday, Erastus said roads leading to the prison have been cordoned off while a strong police and military presence is visible around the facility. He says the compound of the prison is littered with several items destroyed by the prisoners during the pandemonium that broke out at the prisons following the fire outbreak.
