KNUST students question credibility of SRC vetting panel

src-vetting-resultsAll four SRC general secretary aspirants’ dream of being voted into office looks shaky after the SRC electoral commissioner released the outcome of their vetting stating that they were all “not recommended” to be voted for.

Again, four out of the nine presidential aspirants were also not recommended, three treasurer aspirants out of the five were not recommended and one of the four vying for the position of the women’s commissioner was not recommended.

Some students and student activist groups have questioned the credibility of the vetting panel suspecting that there were other external influences that forced them to change the outcome of the vetting results. They also believe some of the panel members were not qualified enough to be on the panel.

They further describe the outcome as very pathetic that an institution consisting of undergraduates and postgraduates could have two third year students (sociology and computer science) serving on the panel with one of them, a failed local NUGS President who vetted those that voted against him during that elections. They say it is a gross disrespect to the entire students body since they spent close to 24 hours monitoring the entire electoral process and also injected much resources into the process.

The SRC electoral commissioner, Essilfie Mechisedeck in an interview on focus FM says they did not recommend all those candidates who failed to secure the pass mark of seventy percent (70%). He however added that since no one had the required marks, nominations have been opened to all to apply for the position of general secretary including the four who were not recommended.

Speaking on focus morning show on Tueday, the chairman of the vetting panel, Justice Jacob Appiah Kubi also confirmed the results of the vetting. He says all the aspirants were made to understand the rules concerning the process.

Supporters of the various aspirants on the other hand are demanding detailed explanations of the process especially with respect to how the marks were allocated.

The vetting chairman says all aspirants who have doubts should contact them for explanations.
