KNUST Students express mixed reactions over lecturers’ decision to hop into frontline politics

KNUST LECTURERSSome Students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, KNUST have hit hard at some KNUST lecturers’ decision to openly declare their support for the main opposition party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) while others believe they have the right to take that decision provided their integrity would not be compromised.

Some senior staff of KNUST earlier this week vouched their support openly to participate in mainstream politics in Ghana by supporting the NPP.

The group, “KNUST NPP Frontliners” aims at helping the NPP win power in the 2016 general elections. They believe the New Patriotic party is the party that can help address the current socio-economic challenges facing the country.

This move by the senior staff of KNUST has attracted a lot of reactions from various quarters with the latest coming from students of KNUST.

Most students argue that, in as much as Lecturers have the right to take the decision of being affiliated to a particular political party, expressing it openly in public has a greater possibility of creating divisions among lecturers who do not belong to the same political party and even among students.

Students say the integrity of these lecturers is questionable and may lose trust in their judgement and will believe that their objectivity has been compromised adding that it was wrong for them to have taken such a decision.

Some students have also expressed fears that lecturers who belong to a particular party may compel them to join their party for fears of losing marks or being discriminated against.
