Greener Grass

goat-eats-grassThe belief that where we are going, thinking about going or hoping to go is always better than where we are coming from is both untrue and senseless in the logical realm.

Truth is we have the tendency to romanticize the unknown  and to believe falsely that everything, in fact, anything is far better than what we currently have or had. The grass is always greener in the neighbor’s garden.

This is just an ungrateful mentality of the greedy, brutish man. Always look closer, hesitate to condemn, and appreciate what you have. Am sure you once knew of a pretty girl, you chased her all year and finally grabbed her,  you thought you had won the lottery, you walked shoulder high…but the attitude soon started, the beauty seems to have faded, what next?  you’re broken up.

And to my ladies, am sure you once met this guy who made you melt like butter, when he asked you out you heaved a sigh and said an emphatic yes, you said this was your last stop in relationships, you’ve found that Mr. Right, your very own Prince……what next? his breath stinks, his snoring keeps you awake all night, his room is so unkempt you’re itching all over, his unwashed plates have gathered moss in the kitchen and you can’t believe a human being can wear suit and come out of that ghetto,  you’re findng all the nice words to tell him it’s over.

You left your old job, petty salary, annoying secretary, a co-worker who chews too much gum. You have this amazing offer from this new company, better money,  a car. You jump at it without even looking at the terms of your contract. What next? Your boss wants to “dedross” you, he openly harasses you and there’s nothing you can do about it, he grabs your *** and slaps your butt at work like you’re some cheap call girl and you growl inside, your pride is gone… your new job requires a lot of underhand deals you don’t feel comfortable getting involved in and what’s more, your director is a piece of work, always on your neck, threatening you with the sack, you’re lost and confused…you miss your old job and your gum chewing co-worker who does everything for you, even that annoying secretary is better than this new one who sees you as her competition with the boss…the pay wasn’t great but your dignity was intact.

Am by no means suggesting your shouldn’t take on new ventures, new ventures have broken grounds for some. But look closely and don’t ever assume it will always be better than the first…the more reason you don’t slap those in your past in the face cos you’ve seen the future…unless of course they deserve it, trust me, some deserve it.

Where you dream of going ain’t always better than where you’re coming from.

Yours truly,
James Mawuli Gawu.
