NDPC Ag. Director-General Reaffirms Ghana’s Dedication to Ocean Conservation at UN Forum

The Acting Director-General of National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), Dr. Audrey Smock Amoah, has reiterated Ghana’s dedication to fostering a sustainable blue economy.

She said this during her address at the 2025 UN High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) in New York.

Speaking on Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG 14), she outlined Ghana’s efforts to safeguard its marine environment.

She highlighted Ghana’s role as a trailblazer in reporting plastic debris density under SDG 14.1.1(b).

“With annual plastic waste exceeding 1.1 million tonnes, the government introduced a Circular Economy Framework for Plastics in 2024 to encourage waste reduction, reuse, and responsible production while guiding investment,” she stated.

According to Dr Amoah, Ghana has enforced a Marine Fisheries Management Plan and ratified the WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies to combat overfishing.

“The country is also drafting a Sustainable Ocean Plan, which incorporates scientific research, community engagement, and global partnerships to manage marine resources responsibly,” she added.

She expressed confidence that through collaboration and innovation, Ghana can secure a healthier future for its oceans. She also spoke on SDGs 3 and 5, reinforcing Ghana’s broader commitment to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals.
