Crime increases as ‘Dumsor’ continues-Amakom residents

‘Dumsor’ is increasing criminal activities in Amakom – Residents

police BoakyeResidents living around Amakom and its environs in Kumasi in the Ashanti region say they are living in fear because of the rampant attacks they experience from armed robbers.

According to them, they feel insecure using some routes in the area especially the Amakom children’s park enclave during the night.

The residents said the place is becoming a hideout for smokers and other criminals.

Commuters who use the area have also indicated that they are being molested by these criminals and their belongings snatched especially when there is power outage.

Weeds have taken over the defunct Kumasi children’s park turning it into a bush and a hiding place for the criminals.
A resident revealed that a student of the Kumasi Polytechnic (K Poly) was robbed and beaten when he was returning from lectures.

The student reportedly had on him his laptop computer, mobile phone and an undisclosed amount of money which were all taken from him by the hoodlums.

“It is very risky and scary to use the Amakom children’s park in the night because of how the robbers snatch our bags and other items. A student from K poly was robbed recently when he was returning from class,” a resident explained.

He added that the situation got worse when the ‘Dumsor’ started.

The residents are calling on the Ashanti regional police command to institute measures to clamp down on the criminals.

They further said, though a watchdog committee was formed to check the situation, their efforts have been unsuccessful.

When contacted, the Ashanti Regional deputy police commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Ampofo Duku promised to deploy his officers to the area since his attention has been drawn to the issue.

He is however advising residents to be security conscious.
