“A competent judiciary alone is not enough”-IGP speaks on justice system

Inspector General of Police, David Asante Apeatu says the only way the criminal justice system can function optimally is for all the institutions involved to work efficiently and in harmony.

The IGP who was addressing Regional Police Commanders in the Ashanti regional capital during the first ever National Police Commanders’ Conference last week explained that “a competent judiciary alone is not enough if any piece of the puzzle including police and prison service is found wanton in the delivery of justice”.

He cited an example of what occurs if there are malfunctioning pieces of the system saying ” it has been detected by the justice for all programme that many remand prisoners were abandoned by Police prosecutors without justification”.

He admonished the commanders to note that “our performance dovetails into that of the judiciary. We either succeed as a system or risk our criminal justice system in jeopardy if we operate in silence”.

He promised to remain a strong bulwark of the commanders in their quest to deal with crime and impunity.

“My confidence in you is unwavering. I cannot allow incompetence and mediocrity to fester when I am in a position to take action”, he stated and encouraged all policemen to work as a team.
