Youth involvement is key in cancer education-Dr. Mrs. Beatrice Wiafe Addai

The President of Breast Care International (BCI) and famous female cancer surgeon, Dr Mrs Beatrice Wiafe Addai says it is crucial that the youth particularly students are educated on cancers.

According to her, these students are best placed to educate a larger number of people when they get the necessary information about the disease.

Addressing the Independence Day Quiz Competition on Cancers at the Burges Hall at the Opoku Ware Senior High School in Kumasi last Friday, the renowned breast cancer advocate said students have proven to have the zeal to carry far whatever message that is engrained on their minds.

The provision of the right message to students as well as the youth, Dr Addai noted would therefore serve the purpose of getting the citizenry informed about the threat of cancer as well as the available treatment of same at the hospitals.

“I sincerely believe the education on all forms of cancers could best be carried out when we get the youth particularly students involved because they would be able to reach a larger number of people with the message than any other group”, the world’s famous medical practitioner posited.

CHAIRPERSON:
The Chief of Asem Traditional Council and Chairman for the occasion, Nana Ampofo Kyei Baffuor commended BCI, the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC) and the Ghana Education Service (GES) for using the quiz competition to create awareness of cancer amongst students.

These students, the Chief noted would in turn go home and pass on the information they have to their parents as well as their mates from other schools.

He thanked the government for adopting as part of the 6th March anniversary celebrations the quiz competition on cancers.

This, he stressed would stir up enthusiasm in the people so as to get the needed education about cancers including breast and cervical cancers.

QUIZ COMPETITION:
Competing for honours as the school with the best knowledge on cancers during a quiz, an event reported to become a national one from now, Opoku Ware Senior High School won the final with 54 points.

Saint Huberts Senior High School followed closely with about 48 points.

Taking the 3rd place was Barekese Senior High School with 40points.

Placing a distant fourth, students from Konadu Yiadom could only garner 33 points.

The competition started with 16 schools in a preliminary stage with four making it to the finals as the first three are billed to receive honours from the presidency at a later date.

Present at the grand final event were tutors and students from the competing schools as well as Mrs Theodosia Wilhemina Jackson, a proprietress and educationist and some members of the Peace and Love Survivors Association (PALSA).
