We voted for NDC to enjoy GHC7k per bag – Women in Cocoa press on Mahama to fulfil promise
Ghanaian Women involved in Cocoa farming have revealed that they voted massively for the National Democratic Congress in the December 7th General Elections because they promised to increase the price of Cocoa to a minimum of GHS7, 000 per bag.
According to the Women in Cocoa, the NDC while in opposition during the electioneering campaign accused the previous Akuffo-Addo led New Patriotic Party administration of cheating farmers even though the Government for the first time had increased a bag of Cocoa to over GHC3, 000 per bag.
But the NDC then insisted that this amount was a cheat on farmers because the world market price at that time was over GHC9, 000 and therefore Ghanaian Cocoa farmers deserved two/thirds of that amount as stipulated in the COCOBOD regulation.
The Women are therefore telling President John Mahama that they will not accept anything less than GHC 7,000 per bag now that they have massively voted for the NDC to come to power and the world market price is over gh10,000 per bag; if not they shall demonstrate and vote against the NDC in 2028.
Madam Martha Addai, President of the Brong Ahafo Women Cocoa Farmers Union (BAWCOF), gave this caution on behalf of all the members during a training workshop on deforestation regulations and productive enhancement program organized by the Ghana Civil Cocoa Platform and European Union in Techiman, the Bono East Regional capital.
