The incompetence theory: featuring Opanaba

mahamaFriends, I have returned from my constituency at Kade where I contested the just ended NDC parliamentary primary. Things didn’t go the way I had expected, but God knows best. He must have a good reason for the outcome of the results. I trust Him because He has never disappointed me in my entire life. Things I have perceived to be disappointments have always turned into blessings.

Anyway, I’ve missed all of you, and it’s good to come back to continue my job as an undertaker of the Elephant.

Incompetence is defined as inability to do something successfully, lack of ability, incapability, lack of skill, lack of proficiency, amateurishness, inexpertness, inefficiency, etc. I, therefore, find it difficult to understand why someone could refer to President Mahama as incompetent when there are solid evidence to prove that he is one of the best performing Heads of State in the history of Ghana and on the continent of Africa. He has excelled where ever he has found himself, and he is undoubtedly the most experienced president in the world.

He was an MP for three terms, Deputy Communications Minister from 1997 to 1998. He became the substantive Minister for Communications from 1998 to 2001. H.E. John Dramani Mahama served as the chairman of the National Communication Authority, and played a key role in stabilizing the Ghana telecom sector after deregulation in 1997.

He also served as a member of the Pan African Parliament where he was chairman of the West Africa Caucus. He was the Minority Parliamentary Spokesman for communications from 2001 to 2004, and NDC National Director of Communications in 2002.

In 2005, Mr. Mahama was the Minority Parliamentary Spokesman for Foreign Affairs, and became Vice President of the Republic of Ghana on 7th January, 2009. He became a caretaker president in 2012 when President Atta Mills died. The young man from Bole was sworn in as President on 7th January, 2013 after winning a one-touch presidential election in 2012.

He was elected chair of ECOWAS for two terms, and was elected chairman of AU Trade Committee.

Kikikikikiki, can we say that of Opanaba? He was part of the team that designed and implemented the redenomination of the cedi which has hugely contributed in the challenges the nation’s economy is experiencing now. The redenomination knocked off four zeros from our currency: 500,000 Cedis became 50 Ghana Cedis, 5,000 Cedis became 50 Ghana Pesewas. 500 Cedis became 5 Ghana Pesewas, and sadly enough the 5 Ghana Pesewa coin became worthless and died on arrival. This caused a sharp rise in inflation; for instance, the cost of a sachet of iced water which used to sell at 500 Cedis representing 5 Ghana Pesewas, short up to 10 Ghana Pesewas – doubled the price.

Opanaba again played a key role in the design and implementation of the e-zwich common platform for all banks, savings and loans companies and rural banks which awfully failed. So, friend, be the judge: who is incompetent here?

The Peter principle is a concept in management theory formulated by Laurence J. Peter in which the selection of a candidate for a position is based on the candidate’s performance in their past and current roles, rather than on abilities relevant to the intended role. Thus, employees only stop being promoted once they can no longer perform effectively, and “managers rise to the level of their incompetence.”

If Laurence J. Peter’s incompetence theory is anything to go by, then Opanaba does not deserve to be a running mate.
