Take reconstitution of College Councils seriously-gov’t told

Ghana News-The Principal of St. Louis College of Education; Mrs. Dame Comfort Boakye -Mensah has made a passionate appeal to government to give urgent attention to the reconstitution of College Councils.

According to her,  the absence of College Councils is seriously negating the efficacious management of the Colleges, and the earlier the issue is tackled for the colleges, the better it would be.

She was speaking on the occasion of the 14th congregation of the college on the theme: The Excellent Teacher -An Indispensable Resource for Sustainable National Development,

She also maintains that,  the current government has been wonderfully supportive towards the cause of Colleges of Education. She says the restoration of students’ allowances and the prompt settlement of  three semesters arrears of Feeding fees have gone a long way towards alleviating Management from the stress their creditors put them through when they purchae food items on credit.

She indicated that, through the National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE) tutors have been smoothly migrated from the Ghana Education Service (GES)  payroll thereby curbing any agitations from the labour front. She noted that,  the NCTE has also properly placed tutors who hitherto were considered Assistant Tutors because of difference in first and second degrees thereby restoring confidence and enthusiasm.

“The accessibility to GetFund for College projects like the construction of a new Multi-purpose Administration Block is also worthy of note coupled with a host of positive policy interventions”, she said.

The principal pleaded with the Minister of Education, who incidentally is the Member of Parliament (MP) for Manhyia South Constituency (where St. Louis College of Education is situated),  to use his good offices to help the construction of a new hall of residence for their increasing intake as well as help complete a three-storey staff flat started by the Students Representative Council (SRC).

She commended the Minister for his instrumentality in the on-going  construction of a new Admistration Block.

Nana Adu Mensah who represented Otumfuo Osei Tutu II,  Asantehene, reminded the graduands that, if they want to be professional teachers, they must love the profession, love the children as their own, and understand their roles as teachers.
