The Metro Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Osei Assibey Antwi has challenged basic school pupils to put up their best in class so as to be able to access the free senior high school policy upon completion of Junior High School.
According to him, the policy would only be available to JHS pupils who pass their Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE) with good grades.
This, he maintained puts the onus on pupils who want to enjoy the non-paying policy by the government to study hard so as to be able to access same.
Addressing pupils at separate functions at the Saint Mary’s Anglican, Amakom Abrotia and K.O. Methodist Basic schools in the Kumasi metropolis this Wednesday, Mr Assibey Antwi encouraged pupils to be serious with their academic work.
ASSURANCE:
Giving assurance to teachers after learning of some challenges the schools were facing in terms of dwindling numbers, Mr Assibey said government was committed to extending the school feeding program to cover more schools in the metropolis.
According to him, the feeding scheme has proven to be a contributing factor in shooting up enrolment figures.
Most pupils, the Mayor noted is enthused at the opportunity to feed at school and are always in school to take advantage of the feeding scheme.
He tasked the school authorities to also devise strategies apart from the feeding program to entice pupils to stay in school.
FULFILLMENT:
Speaking to this reporter later, Mr Osei-Assibey expressed delight that the government had been able to fulfill their manifesto promise of making senior high school free.
According to him, this is a major policy many presidents would have loved to initiate but did not have opportunity.
He, therefore, commended the president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for making do his promise and ensuring that almost 600,000 Ghanaian students have the opportunity to attend senior high schools without paying for tuition, feeding, books and other essentials.
Visiting the schools in the company of the Metro Director of Education, Alex Atta Asante, Mr Assibey urged the public to support government to improve the levels of education in the country since that is the only way the economy could be turned around rapidly.
