Several wounded, others arrested as Students of Kumasi Technical Institute destroy property in angry protests

Students of the Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI) have destroyed school property worth several thousands of cedis in a protest.

Some of the items destroyed include vehicles, water tank, glass windows, air conditioners amongst others.

Information available to rawgist.com is that some house masters saw some students in form three wearing uniform that was not prescribed during the school’s prep time and some also using mobile phones. They “insisted that they wear the prescribed uniforms and also tried seizing their mobile phones”. The students also recount that some of these students disrespected and struggled with the teachers when they tried to deal with the situation. They say a teacher gave one student multiple slaps; an action that angered the other form three students who picked machetes and other weapons to attack the teacher back.

The students insist that wearing t-shirts of their church Associations and other student organizations during prep time was not a new thing and were surprised that their teacher would assault their colleague over that.

They started vandalizing school property when the authorities prevented them from attacking the teacher.

Military and Police men intervened and helped restore peace and order and also effected the arrest of some of the students.

At least ten of the students sustained varying degrees of injuries during the violent demonstration and were sent to nearby health facilities for treatment.

Teaching and learning have also come to a standstill with many of the students leaving the school for their homes.

Manhyia Divisonal Police command is investigation the matter. ACP Kwaku Buah who is the commander of that division was not happy at the conduct of the students and warned that “it is becoming one too many”.
