Residents of Atwima Nwabiagya call for help over herdsmen activities

Ghana News–Residents of Sokwai, Pasro and Akwaboa in the Atwima Nwabiagya South District of the Ashanti Region are calling on the government to come to their aid as Fulani headsmen have taken over their lands and are destroying their farmland and water resources.

A resident of the area, Opanin Kwadwo Adjei who disclosed the information on OTEC Fm said, the Fulani headsmen and their cattle migrated from the Agogo area, in the Asante Akyem South District of the Ashanti Region when the authorities chased them away.

He hinted that, the chiefs and the elders of the area gave the land to the Fulani headsmen to operate on. He however says they have moved beyond the land given to them and are now destroying their farm produce and the water bodies and other natural resources.

‘’ As I speak, they have destroyed my six acres of cassava. When I confronted them they threatened to kill me if I questioned their activities, they have become so powerful that if you questioned their activities, they will either beat you or report you to the police and the police will just arrest and detain you without asking your side of the story,’’ he lamented.

He accused the assemblywoman of the area, Hon. Mercy Owusu Sekyere’s husband; Agya Osei and some of the elders in the communities of supporting the herdmen since they own some of the cattle.

The production team subsequently called the assemblywoman of the area, Hon. Mercy Owusu find out what measures were being taken to solve the problem. She explained that the elders of the area have served notice to the leadership of the herdsmen and the affected locals to meet and settle their differences.

They are however skeptical and wants the security set-up of the country to intervene before things turn ugly.
